The Avignon Opera house

Avignon has long
been conducive to theatre, hosting Molière and his troupe in the 1700’s. The gracious Italian-style theatre known as the “Comédie”, built in 1734 on the Place Crillon, quickly grew too small and was joined in 1825 by the Opera House built on the Place de l’Horloge.

Rebuilt in 1846 after a fire, the Opera House offers music, dance, theatre and opera performances throughout the entire year, and the well-balanced programming draws a wide audience.
